The Timepiece, Metaphor and Embodiment of Modern Times

Combining art and technology, clocks have always been central to the history of the Banco de España, which possesses a valuable collection of timepieces from different periods and provenances in a range of styles. A selection of these items is currently on show in 'The Tyranny of Chronos', an exhibition which juxtaposes the clocks with paintings, sculptures, tapestries and photographs that demonstrate the importance that has long been given to the notion of time in art.

The portrait of José de Toro-Zambrano y Ureta was the first of six commissioned by the bank from the artist between 1784 and 1788. The intervention has confirmed that a later artist added the medal on Toro-Zambrano's chest. All traces of which have now been removed.

The latest call for applications is for art historians studying the areas of ‘Conservation of Italian and French Baroque Painting’ and ‘Conservation of the Frames Collection’ at the Prado. The deadline for applications is 28 April 2025.
